These calculations are only performed in the non bare soil PFTs ($j>1$), over the vegetated fraction $a_j$. 
The maximum amount of water that can be added to the interception reservoir is:

The intercepted water amount $I$ is therefore updated with:

where $f_j$ is the fraction of rainfall that cannot be intercepted and necessarily falls to the ground.
The throughfall $P_T$ is then calculated with:
