Action Brief description Status Branch name Trac ticket n° Wiki page name Reviewer(s) Review status Nb of weeks Ready for merge If "NO", reason and status for 2015
NOC-1 Refinement of Griffies operator Not done but has encouraged improvements to the Madec operator which may negate the need for this development (see NOC-3 development)
NOC-2 Testing, validation and commissioning of recent major changes Partially complete dev_r4743_NOC2_ZTS #1367 1367_NOC2_ZTS Issues with stability of global configurations using full ice embedding have been partially addressed with the introduction of sub-timestepping for the vertical advection (branch dev_r4743_NOC2_ZTS) and options for coping with land-fast ice (in progress). Problems remain at the extreme Southern boundary where the ice-shelf edges are represented by sheer cliffs. The new under-shelf facility may alleviate this problem. Solutions for known problems with the iceberg option (ICB) have been collected from the community and implemented as bug-fixes to the trunk. Additional solutions for handling icebergs correctly at the north-fold and when land-only regions are suppressed are under test and will be ready for the merge. Z-tilde has undergone extensive testing in regional configurations by Jerome Chanut leading to significant improvements. Some nursing in extreme conditions (e.g. Bay of Fundy) is still required and the use of Z-tilde in global configurations cannot, yet, be recommended.
NOC-3 System simplification Ongoing but stage complete dev_CNRS0_NOC1_LDF #1260 1260_CNRS0_NOC1_LDF Improvements and rationalisation of LDF options achieved (branch dev_CNRS0_NOC1_LDF). Further simplification awaiting agreed implementation plans
NOC-4 On-line vertical interpolation of BDY data and related configuration manager options Done dev_r4621_NOC4_BDY_VERT_INTERP #1299 Implemented in branch dev_r4621_NOC4_BDY_VERT_INTERP. Ready for merge when required.

NOC-1 - Refinement of Griffies operator

Motivation: Improvements to the computation of properties along isopycnal slopes and a full investiagtion into opportunities for optimising performance
Status : xx
Main tasks : Add algorithmic improvements. Profile performance on at least two architectures. Investigate bottlenecks and look for generic improvements in performance that can be made without compromising code readability.
Science Reviewer: George Nurser
System Reviewer: Gurvan Madec
Deadline: Aug 2014
Priority:
Depends on:
Principal Investigator : Andrew Coward

NOC-2 - Testing, validation and commissioning of recent major changes

Motivation: NOCS is responsible for several recent additions which need more thorough testing to establish them as acceptable default options. These are: a. The Griffies operator; b. Z-tilde verical coordinate and c. Ice embedding. A major component of the NOC 2014 work-plan will be to test these options both individually and in concert in demanding global configurations.
Status : xx
Main tasks : Set up test cases with ORCA1, ORCA025 and ORCA0083. Perform multi-centennial tests with ORCA1; multi-decadal tests with ORCA025 and high-variability tests (e.g. tides) with ORCA0083. Document recommeneded settings and results.
Science Reviewer: Gurvan Madec
System Reviewer:
Deadline: Sept 2014
Priority:
Depends on: NOC-1
Principal Investigator : Andrew Coward

NOC-3 - System simplification

Motivation: As a first step towards system simplification unused options will be removed and the non-linear free surface will become the default.
Status : xx
Main tasks : Remove the unrecommended Neptune options. Add thickness weighted tendency calculations as default. Make the non-linear free surface the default.

NOC-4 - On-line vertical interpolation of BDY data and related configuration manager options

Motivation: An online vertical interpolation for BDY inputs is needed to allow easy switching between vertical coordinate systems without the need to alter input boundary files.
Status : xx
Main tasks : Implement an on-line vertical interpolation of BDY inputs. Test thoroughly in, at least, the AMM configuration. Ensure the vertical interpolation schemes are generic and modular enough to also be used in the configuration manager tools and add this functionality to these tools. Document and record test cases.
