CNRS-1 - LIM3 consolidation

Motivation: LIM3 consolidation (towards only LIM3 in the system)
Status : continuation
Main tasks :
(1) Coupling interface of LIM3 with atmosphere
(2) Reproducibility of LIM3
(3) LIM3 in mono-category -> LIM2
(4) Simplification and cleaning of LIM3

Deadline:
end 2014
Priority: high
Depends on:
Principal Investigators :
Martin Vancoppenolle & Clement Rousset

CNRS-2 - LIM3, landfast (grounded) sea ice

Motivation: In embedded sea-ice, when the ocean thickness beneath sea-ice becomes too small, the model blow up (due to the stability limit of vertical advection). A simple solution consists in the addition of bottom friction on the ice dynamics to prevent further sea-ice accumulation at a grid point where the ice thickness is already large compared to the ocean depth.
Status :
Main tasks :
(1) Introduce the friction term & test stability of an embedded ORCA2-LIM3 (50 years)
(2) Work on the criterion with scientific validation
Science Reviewer:
System Reviewer:
Deadline: Before April 2015
Priority:
Depends on:
Principal Investigator : Martin Vancoppenolle & Gurvan Madec

CNRS-3 - LIM3, melt ponds

Motivation:
Status :
Main tasks :
(1) Plug the existing routine
(2) Make a few calibration runs (4x50-yr ORCA1-LIM3)
Science Reviewer:
System Reviewer:
Deadline: Before April 2015
Priority:
Depends on:
Principal Investigator : Martin Vancoppenolle & Olivier Lecomte

CNRS-4 - Stochastic parameterization of the effect of unresolved scales in the equation of state

Motivation: Unresolved scales have been shown to produce an important effect on the horizontal density gradient through the non-linearity of EOS (Brankart, 2013). This effect needs to be taken into account in low resolution ocean simulation. It is also useful to explicitly simulate uncertainties in Ensemble Data Assimilation systems.
Status : Existing preliminary code from J.-M. Brankart
Main tasks :
(1) Normalize and implement the code
(2) Test and validate on reference configurations
Science Reviewer:
System Reviewer:
Deadline: Before April 2015
Priority: High
Depends on: none
Principal Investigator : Pierre-Antoine Bouttier

CNRS-5 - Offline with vvl

Motivation: Add missing pieces of code to make passive tracers model run offline with linear free surface
Status :
Main tasks :
(1) run a forced simulation ORCA2(1)-LIM2(3) and output variables needed for linear free surface, especially the changing vertical grid in time
(2) Rewrite the Offline modules to take into account the changing grid in time
Science Reviewer: Gurvan Madec
System Reviewer:
Deadline:
Priority:
Depends on:
Principal Investigator : Christian Ethé

CNRS-10 - TAM

Motivation: Extending the applications of NEMO-ASSIM component and consolidating them
Status : continuation
Main tasks :
(1) Provide a demonstrator of NEMO-ASSIM components, based on the reference configuration for Data assimilation with NEMO (SEABASS), and the associated documentation
(2) Add supplementary validation test routines for Tangent Linear and adjoint models (NEMOTAM)
(3) Enrich demonstrator with different functionalities (e.g. ensemble runs, singular vectors computing) to be defined by consulting the NEMO-ASSIM group
(4) Monitor advances in Automatic differentitation field and quantify its applicatibility to NEMO
Science Reviewer: Arthur Vidard, INRIA, LJK
System Reviewer: Arthur Vidard, INRIA, LJK
Deadline: 2nd semester 2015
Priority:
Depends on: none
Principal Investigator : Pierre-Antoine Bouttier

CNRS-12 - Finalisation of Energy trends diagnostics KE and PE

Motivation: Finalize trends diagnostics (3D trends of tracers, momentum, kinetic energy and potential energy)
Status : Continuation of 2014
Main tasks :
(1) implement the 3D output (using xIOS) of tracers and momentum trends (done with validation in 2013)
(2) compute and output the 3D trends of PE and KE : vvl case to be validated
(3) documentation
System Reviewer:
Deadline:
end 2014
Depends on: the introduction of TEOS10 (for dynamical potential energy)
Principal Investigator : Sebastien Masson, Gurvan Madec and Fabien Roquet

CNRS-13 - Subduction diagnostics

Motivation: add a useful diagnostics of subduction
Status : Already coded/tested in v3.4
Main tasks : adapt to the current version
Science Reviewer: Gurvan Madec
System Reviewer: Gurvan Madec
Deadline: end 2014
Priority:
Depends on:
Principal Investigator : Christian Ethé

CNRS-14 - LIM3, multiple tracer interface

Motivation
Status : starting project
Main tasks :
(1) Introduce a tracer array (jpi, jpj, jpl, jpx) in sea ice; compute the associated terms of tendencies (volume and area tracer options)
(2) Plug existing tracers (age and bulk salinity) and test their reproducibility with control
(3) Plug all existing tracers
Science Reviewer: Pas Olivier Aumont (bas bgc du tout). LLN ?
System Reviewer: Christian Ethé
Deadline:
Priority:
Depends on: none
Principal Investigator : Martin Vancoppenolle

CNRS-15 - LIM3, FCT4 advection scheme

Motivation: Rachid, using a classical test case of advection of a passive tracer, have shown that a 4th order Flux Corrected Transport (FCT4) had a behavior very close to the one of a Pather scheme, i.e. the one used in LIM. It is much cheaper as you don't have to advect second order moments in addition to the field itself.
Status : The FCT4 scheme has been coded and tested as part of a 3D advection scheme for ocean tracers.
Main tasks : adapt to LIM3 and test it. If it performs as expected, implement it is the current version of LIM3
Science Reviewer: Martin Vancoppenolle
System Reviewer:
Deadline:
Priority:
Depends on:
Principal Investigator : Clément Rousset, Gurvan Madec

CNRS-16 - Vertical redistribution of salt rejection due to ice formation

Motivation: Introduce the sub-grid-scale brine rejection parameterization proposed by Nguyen et al JGR2009. Such a parameterization tends to reduced the mixed layer depth below sea-ice (which is generally to large). Improve the parameterization by taking into account the velocity difference between ice and ocean.
Status : Already coded and tested in v3.4 with ORCA1-LIM3. Ocean Modelling paper in revision (Barthélemy et al. 2014)
Main tasks :adapt to the current version
Science Reviewer:
System Reviewer:
Deadline:
Priority:
Depends on:
Principal Investigator : Gurvan Madec, Antoine Barthélémy
