Met_Office-11 - Numerical Mixing (Joint action with NOC)

Motivation: Recent tests with the Lee et al (JPO 2002) diagnostic in ORCA025 have shown that NEMO in common with other models has high levels of numerical mixing of water masses in the interior when used at eddy-permitting resolution. The goal of this action is to further quantify this in the ORCA025 configuration and test options that may reduce the problem.
Status:
Main Tasks:

  • Repeat Lee et al diagnosis for coupled model with ORCA025
  • Perhaps look at other diagnostics, eg. Ilicak et al (OM 2012), Burchard and Rennau (OM 2008),
  • Test impact of different numerical choices eg:
    • z tilde
    • alternative tracer advection schemes
    • Griffies rotation operator for isopycnal mixing
    • reduced gridscale Reynolds number using Smagorinsky or UBS momentum advection
