Currently coupled ocean/atmosphere models ignore solar radiation that penetrates into sea ice. This penetrating radiation warms up the ice core instead of contributing to top melt so is important to include. Code already exists to model the effect of penetrating radiation in SI3 but it lacks the ability to get this data from the atmospheric component (via OASIS). This extra functionality is added with this ticket.
