     167abstract = {{T}his work analyzes the seasonal and spatial variability of the {O}xygen {M}inimum {Z}one ({OMZ}) and its influence on the composition of the organic matter deposited on the bottom sediments of {M}ejillones {B}ay. {T}he obtained results indicate that the upper limit of the {OMZ} fluctuated during the year between 20 and 45 m depth. {I}n summer, this limit ranged from 20 to 35 m depth, whereas in winter it ranged from to 40 to 55 m depth. {A}ccording to a {R}ock-{E}val analysis, the organic matter present in the deepest sediments (100 m) is better preserved than the shalow material (35 m). {T}his analysis revealed that the sediment deposited in the bay is marine phytoplanktonic in origin ({T}ype {II}) and immature. {T}he ratio of total sulfur to total organic carbon ranges from 0.8 to 3.9% at station {A} (35 m) and from 5.7 to 10.3% at the deeper stations (70 and 100 m). {T}he {C}:{N} ratio in the sediments varies between cold and warm periods, with respective averages of 9.13 and 7.74 and a wintertime peak of 11%. {T}he {ANDEVA} results indicate that the dissolved oxygen ({P} < 0.001), total carbon ({C}) ({P} < 0.001), total nitrogen ({N}) ({P} < 0.008), total organic carbon ({TOC}) ({P} < 0.001), and hydrogen index ({HI}) (mg {HC} g {COT}-1) ({P} < 0.019) differ significantly by depth. {T}he dissolved oxygen concentration was found to be related to the conservation of organic matter in the sediments: the organic matter in the deeper sediments was preserved better due to the effect of the {OMZ}.},

     201abstract = {{T}he present investigation aims at identifying the needs of the {A}rgentinean agro-business sector for climate research and information. {O}ur approach is focused on any type of climate information from past observations to seasonal prediction and climate change projections. {W}e tried, in particular, to evaluate the possible existence of specific research themes that would be of major interest for these agriculture end-users. {W}e interviewed representatives of seventeen companies from three major agrobusiness sectors: (1) regional/national entities such as agricultural associations, cooperatives and commercial trade boards; (2) insurance companies in the {A}rgentinean agro-insurance market; and (3) large national and international companies representing cereal producers, agro-chemistry and agro-seeds. {W}hile all the interviewees recognized the strong influence of climate on their activities, they all pointed out that, at the time of making decision, they considered the political and economic risks rather than the climate one. {I}n many aspects, climate is often considered as a fatality against which it is difficult to be protected. {A}n interesting result is the confidence of the private sectors in the climate information provided by public sources ({INTA}, {SMN}, {U}niversities) although they contract private consultants for frequent reports and tendencies. {F}inally, we explain how such sectors could make a better use of climate information (seasonal prediction, climate change scenarios) that could be integrated in their business projections. {I}n particular, the development of new financial contracts (climate derivatives) open in countries with a relatively poor insurance history new ways to protect the different agricultural sectors, from the producer to large companies.},

     219abstract = {{T}he present paper describes the quality-control component of an automatic procedure ({APACH}: {A} {P}rocedure for {A}utomated {Q}uality {C}ontrol and {H}omogenization of {W}eather {S}tation {D}ata) developed to control quality and homogenize the historical daily temperature and precipitation data from meteorological stations. {T}he quality-control method is based on a set of decision-tree algorithms analyzing separately precipitation and minimum and maximum temperature. {A}ll our tests are non-parametric and therefore are potentially useful in regions or countries presenting different climates as those observed in {A}rgentina. {T}he method is applied to the 1959-2005 historical daily database of the {A}rgentine {N}ational {W}eather {S}ervice. {O}ur results are coherent with the history of the {W}eather {S}ervice and more specifically with the history of implementation of systematized quality control processes. {I}n temperature, our method detects a larger number of suspect values before 1967 (when there was no quality control) and after 1997 (when only real-time quality control had been applied). {I}n precipitation, the detection of error in extreme precipitations is complex, but our method clearly detected a strong decrease in the number of potential outliers after 1976 when the {N}ational {W}eather {S}ervice was militarized, and the network was strongly reduced, focusing more on airport weather stations. {A}lso in precipitation, we analyze in detail the long dry sequences and are able to identify potential long erroneous sequences. {T}his is important for the use of the data for hydrological or agricultural impact studies. {F}inally, all the data are flagged with codes representing the path followed by the record in our decision-tree algorithms. {W}hile each code is associated to one of the categories ("{U}seful", "{N}eed-{C}heck", "{D}oubtful" or "{S}uspect"), the final user is free to redefine such category-assignment.},

     237abstract = {{A} weather pattern clustering method is applied and calibrated to {A}rgentinean daily weather stations in order to predict daily precipitation data. {T}he clustering technique is based on k-means and is applied to a set of 17 atmospheric variables from the {ERA}-40 reanalysis covering the period 1979-1999. {T}he set of atmospheric variables represent the different components of the atmosphere (dynamical, thermal and moisture). {D}ifferent sensitivity tests are applied to optimize (1) the number of observations (weather patterns) per cluster, (2) the spatial domain size of the weather pattern around the station and (3) the number of members of the ensembles. {A}ll the sensitivity tests are compared using the {ROC} ({R}elative {O}perating {C}haracteristic) {S}kill {S}core ({RSS}) derived from the {ROC} curve used to assess the performance of a predictive system. {F}irst, we found the number of observations per cluster to be optimum for values larger than 39. {S}econd, the spatial domain size (similar to 4 degrees x 4 degrees) was found to be closer to a local scale than to a synoptic scale, certainly due to a dominant role of the moisture components in the optimization of the transfer function. {I}ndeed, when reducing the set of variables to the subset of dynamical variables, the predictive skill of the method is significantly reduced, but at the same time the domain size must be increased. {A} potential improvement of the method may therefore be to consider different domains for dynamical and non-dynamical variables. {T}hird, the number of members per ensembles of simulations was estimated to be always two to three times larger than the mean number of observations per cluster (meaning that at least all the observed weather patterns are selected by one member). {T}he skill of the statistical method to predict daily precipitation is found to be relatively homogeneous all over the country for different thresholds of precipitation.},

     287abstract = {{Paleohydrological and archaeological evidence from the Southern and South-Eastern Arabian Peninsula reveal strong relations between phases of human settlements and climate change linked to the Indian monsoon system. During the early to mid-Holocene, large fresh-water lakes extended in the lowland deserts of Ramlat as-Sab'atayn (Yemen) and Wahiba Sands (Oman), which were very similar to those occurring in the North, in the Rub' al-Khali (Saudi Arabia), at that time. Many archaeological sites, characterized by scattered stone artefacts, ostrich-eggshells and bones around hearths, are related to this lacustrine phase, which culminated around 10 000­8000 cal yr B.P. in the lowland deserts before the lakes progressively dried up. The last record of fresh-water bodies' extensions date back 7300 cal yr B.P. at Shabwa (Yemen) and 7500 cal yr B.P. at al-Haid (Oman). Then, fresh-water was probably available only from seasonal run-off from adjacent highlands, where paleolakes persisted into the late Holocene. Dry climate conditions in the inland desert of Yemen during the late Holocene coincide with a phase of intensive human inhabitation as testified by development of irrigation in the piedmontane areas, numerous necropolises of built collective burials and houses.}},

     348abstract = {{T}his study addresses the spatial and temporal variability of physical-chemical properties and sedimentation rates of particulate matter of the water column at a fixed station set within {B}ahia de {M}ejillones del {S}ur, during the austral summer of 2003-2004. {T}he water column was generally characterized by warmer oxygen-rich surface waters, marked stratification gradients between about 10 to 20 m depths and by colder, denser and sub-oxic upwelling waters from 30 m depths to the bottom throughout studied period. {T}he bay was governed by three different water masses: the {S}urface {S}ub-{T}ropical {W}aters ({SSTW}), {S}ub-{A}ntarctic {W}aters ({SAAW}) and the {E}quatorial {S}ub-{S}urface {W}aters ({ESSW}). {T}he surface waters exhibited a clear alternation between weak and short (three to eight days) upwelling events and longer (29 days) periods of stratification. {D}uring the weak upwelling events and at the onset of the stratification periods, sub-oxic to micro-oxic conditions prevailed with elevated nutrient concentrations at the 10 to 15 m depth layer. {T}he variability of oxygen saturation levels and of the dissolved inorganic nutrients nitrogen ({N}), phosphorus ({P}) and silicic acid ({S}i), as well as the behavior of the {N}:{P} and {S}i:{NID} ratios, indicated the important combined effects of internal recycling of the organic matter in the surface water column and of the contribution of allochthonous nutrients from upwelled bottom waters. {T}he fortnightly variability of the total flux of particulate material collected in sediment traps in the bay suggest that material deposition from the water column is governed by the alternation of upwelling and stratification events. {I}n addition, the sediment traps registered nitrogen impoverishment with increasing depths, suggesting that remineralisation processes affected the settling of particles and the denitrification of the oxydo-reducting deeper waters of the bay.},

     411abstract = {{T}hrough an extensive sampling and dating of pairs of associated shells and charcoal fragments combined with reanalysis of all the available previous data, we reconstruct the evolution throughout the {H}olocene of the regional marine radiocarbon reservoir effect ({D}elta {R}) values along the northern {C}hile-southern {P}eru area (14 degrees-24 degrees {S}). {A}fter elimination of the cases in which the terrestrial component yielded older ages than the marine shells to which they were associated, the study is based upon data from 47 pairs of associated marine and terrestrial material. {O}ur results suggest major changes in both the magnitude and variability range of {D}elta {R} during the whole {H}olocene {P}eriod: (1) between 10,400 and 6840 cal yr {BP}, high values (511 +/- 278 yr) probably result from a strengthened {SE} {P}acific subtropical anticyclone and shoaling of equatorial subsurface waters during intensified upwelling events; (2) between 5180 and 1160 cal yr {BP}, lower values (226 +/- 98 yr) may reflect a major influence of subtropical water and diminished coastal upwelling processes; (3) during the last similar to thousand years, high values (between 355 +/- 105 and 253 +/- 207 yr) indicate an increased influence of {C}-14-depleted water masses and of {ENSO}. {F}or the early twentieth century a {D}elta {R} value of 253 +/- 207 yr was calculated.},

     443abstract = {{T}he {S}outh {P}oroto-{R}ungwe geothermal field, in the northern part of the {M}alawi rift, {T}anzania divides in two main areas. {T}he relatively high altitude northern area around the main {N}gozi, {R}ungwe, {T}ukuyu and {K}yejo volcanoes, is characterised by cold and gas-rich springs. {I}n contrast, hot springs occur in the southern and low-altitude area between the {K}yela and {L}ivingstone faults. {T}he isotopic signature of the almost stagnant, cold springs of the {N}orthern district is clearly influenced by {H}2{O}-{CO}2(g) exchange as evidenced from negative oxygen-shifts in the order of few deltas permil. {I}n contrast, the isotopic signature of waters discharged from the hot springs of the {S}outhern district is markedly less affected by the {H}2{O}-{CO}2(g) interaction. {T}his evidence is interpreted as an effect of the large, permanent outflow of these springs, which supports the hypothesis of a regional-scale recharge of the major thermal springs. {M}easurements of carbon isotope variations of the dissolved inorganic carbon of waters and {CO}2(g) from the {N}orthern and {S}outhern springs support a model of {CO}2(g)-driven reactivity all over the investigated area. {O}ur combined chemical and isotopic results show that the composition of hot springs is consistent with a mixing between (i) cold surface fresh ({SFW}) and (ii) {D}eep {H}ot {M}ineralised ({DHMW}) {W}ater, indicating that the deep-originated fluids also supply most of the aqueous species dissolved in the surface waters used as local potable water. {B}ased on geothermometric approaches, the temperature of the deep hydrothermal system has been estimated to be higher than 110 degrees {C} up to 185 degrees {C}, in agreement with the geological and thermal setting of the {M}alawi rift basin. {G}eochemical data point to (i) a major upflow zone of geothermal fluids mixed with shallow meteoric waters in the {S}outhern part of the province, and (ii) gas absorption phenomena in the small, perched aquifers of the {N}orthern volcanic highlands.},

     461abstract = {{A} sediment core from the {C}abo {F}rio coastal shelf (-23.19 {S}, -41.8 {W}; 117 m depth), was analyzed for {TOC}, {C}/{N} ratio, organic petrography and planktonic foraminiferal content to evaluate variations in local productivity caused by changes in upwelling intensity and its relation to regional and global climatic variations during the last millennium. {T}he {C}abo {F}rio core recorded the last 1200 years of sedimentation, with rates varying from 0.11 to 0.32 mm yr(-1). {F}oraminiferal and organic geochemical analyses indicate the occurrence of three distinct periods of productivity. {F}rom 850 {AD} until 1070 {AD}, foraminifera fluxes consisting primarily of {T}urborotalita quinqueloba indicate stronger {S}outh {A}tlantic {C}entral {W}ater ({SACW}) transport onto the shelf, which induced high biological productivity that was also recorded by high {TOC} and marine palynomorphs content and a low {C}/{N} atomic ratio. {T}his period coincided with a northward displacement of the atmospheric {I}ntertropical {C}onvergence {Z}one ({ITCZ}) and {S}outh {A}tlantic {H}igh ({SAH}) systems driven by positive temperature anomalies in the {N}orth {A}tlantic {O}cean during the {M}edieval {C}limate {A}nomaly ({MCA}). {F}rom 1070 until 1500 {AD}, low {TOC} flux and planktonic foraminifera fluxes and high {C}/{N} atomic ratios suggest a reduction in marine productivity, probably driven by reduced transport of {SACW} associated with the southward displacement of the {SAH} and weakening of northeasterly winds. {T}he period between 1500 and 1830 {AD}, which corresponds to the {L}ittle {I}ce {A}ge, is marked by increased fluxes of planktonic foraminifera, principally of {G}lobigerina bulloides and {G}lobigerinita glutinata. {T}hese species mark an increase in productivity linked to {SACW} upwelling, supported by the enhancement of northeasterly winds and southward displacement of the {ITCZ} and {SAH}.},

     528abstract = {{PALAEOPEDOLOGICAL} {APPROACH} {OF} {THE} {ENVIRONMENT} {OF} {FOSSIL} {HOMINIDS} {FROM} {THE} {SANGIRAN} {DOME} ({CENTRAL} {JAVA}, {INDONESIA}) {T}he thick fossiliferous volcano-sedimentary series of the {S}angiran dome area ({K}alibeng, {P}ucangan, {G}renzbank, {K}abuh and {N}otopuro) from central {J}ava ({I}ndonesia) were deposited throughout the {Q}uaternary and represent a succession of coastal, marine and finally continental terrestrial environments. {P}alaeosoils from these series of {S}outheast {A}sia are good indicators of the successive landscapes in which early hominids lived and migrated during the {L}ower and early {M}iddle {P}leistocene. {T}his palaeopedological study deals with seven localities distributed over an area of ca. 50 km(2). {S}ix palaeosoil orders (histosol, gleysol, vertisol, argillisol, protosol, oxisol) are characterised and include 19 pedotypes. {W}e investigated the south-eastern and northwestern fossiliferous regions, which show very different sedimentary sequences. {T}he characterisation of successive pedoclimatic contexts and toposequences enables us to reconstruct the local palaeogeography and informs about the climate (mainly influenced by south-eastern {A}sia monsoon cycles) that prevailed during the periods of palaeosoil development. {T}he first fully terrestrial levels were identified at the base of the upper {P}ucangan unit, corresponding to the development of an open landscape on earlier sites of wide coastal swamps. {H}igher up in the series, environments are indicative of a contrasted seasonal climate with a long dry season, alternate with periods of more humid palustrine conditions. {R}ecurrent aridity proxies are then found in the overlying {G}renzbank and {K}abuh series (both have yield the most abundant hominid fossils). {S}oils from these series reflect a long dry season and an open vegetation landscape, in agreement with stratigraphical and palynological observations.},

     546abstract = {{E}lemental and isotopic compositions of organic matter in surficial sediments from five transects across {L}agoa do {C}aco ({B}razil) were analyzed to identify the depth-related processes that affect the production and deposition of sedimentary organic matter in this shallow tropical lake. {E}ach of four transverse transects began at a margin dominated by aquatic macrophytes ({E}leocharis), crossed the central deep part of the lake, and terminated in the opposite, macrophyte-dominated margin. {I}n each transect, {TOC} concentrations, {C}/{N} ratios, and delta {C}-13 values decreased between 0 and 4 m, whereas delta {N}-15 values increased. {T}he variables remained stable in sediment from 4 m water depth to the center of the lake at 10 m. {T}he depth-related patterns reflect differences in both the delivery and the deposition of organic matter in the lake. {O}rganic matter is produced in abundance in the marginal area by emersed and submerged macrophyte vegetation that diminishes with depth and disappears at 4 meters. {A}fter the disappearance of macrophytes, organic matter is produced at low rates principally by open-lake phytoplankton. {D}rawdown of dissolved oxygen is high in the lake margins, but it is low in the oligotrophic open waters of the lake. {P}reservation of organic matter is consequently better in sediments of the lake margins than in deep waters. {T}he depth-related pattern of organic matter delivery and deposition in the sediments of {L}agoa do {C}aco, in which water levels are sensitive to groundwater fluctuations, shows that the elemental and isotopic compositions of sediment organic matter can provide a record of changes in the paleohydrology of this and other similar shallow lake systems.},
