[53]63Overview
64========
[38]65
[127]66The TropFlux project aims at providing daily, timely, accurate air-sea heat
67and momentum flux data for the entire 30°N-30°S region.
[38]68
[127]69Wind stresses and the four components of net surface heat flux are currently
70available for the entire 1979 to September 2011 period.
71We are currently working on a regular (~monthly) update of the
[136]72TropFlux product until 3-4 months behind realtime, which should be
73available in 2012.
[38]74
[127]75TropFlux is largely derived from a combination of
[139]76|erai|_
[127]77re-analysis data for turbulent and longwave fluxes, and
[139]78|isccp|_
[136]79surface radiation data for shortwave flux.
[127]80All input products are bias- and amplitude-corrected on the basis of
[139]81|gtma|_
[127]82data, before surface net heat flux and wind stresses are computed using the
[139]83|coare|_.
[127]84A precise description of the flux computation procedure, as well as a
85detailed evaluation against other timely, daily air-sea heat flux
86alternatives (OAFLUX, NCEP, NCEP2, ERA-I) is provided in
[186]87|pkbetal2012|_.
[127]88The wind stress product is described, evaluated and compared against other
[137]89widely used products (QuikSCAT, NCEP, NCEP2, ERA-I) in
[186]90|pkbetal2012b|_
[38]91
[111]92We believe that this product offers the following advantages:
[38]93
[127]94 - better variability and less biases than re-analysis fluxes (and equivalent
95   or slightly better than the best performing products:
[139]96   |oaflux|_ for heat fluxes and
97   |erai|_
[127]98   for wind stresses) ,
99 - available until Septempber 2011, and soon updated every month, lagging
100   realtime by ~3 months,
101 - a simple estimate of surface shortwave radiation is provided from OLR
102   data, as a near-realtime alternative to the more accurate but irregularly
103   updated ISCCP data.
[55]104
[147]105The TropFlux product has been developed under a collaboration between the
106`Laboratoire d'Océanographie: Expérimentation et Approches Numériques (LOCEAN) <http://www.locean-ipsl.upmc.fr/>`_ from
[127]107`Institut Pierre Simon Laplace <http://www.ipsl.fr/>`_, France and
108`National Institute of Oceanography/CSIR <http://www.nio.org/>`_, India.
[136]109Bilateral scientific visits to France and India have been supported by
[140]110`Institut de Recherche pour le Développement <http://www.ird.fr/>`_, France.
