Workshop to analyse and discuss the preliminary results of NEMO in CMIP6 - 28 & 29 January 2016 in Grenoble - France

Motivations

All the groups involved in the CMIP6 experiments are now setting up and testing their configurations (ESM or forced ocean in OCMIP). For those using NEMO or part of it as ocean, sea-ice and or biogeochemical component, it appears to be useful to share the analysis of their preparatory simulations in order to identify the robust results, the weaknesses and possible improvements.

Goals

Comparing results of NEMO in mainly 2 different global resolutions in different experiments, i.e forced or coupled with different atmospheric models can allow us to better understand and hopefully correct some biais by discriminating the adjustments of the coupled mode from the internal errors of the ocean model.

NEMO configurations in play :

All groups are expected to be using nemo.v3_6_STABLE version of the platform. The configurations should be the ones used in CMIP6. The list below describes geographical extension and model resolution. All combination of NEMO components: dynamics, with or without NEMO sea-ice (LIM) or biogeochemistry(PISCES) are welcome.

Proposed agenda

The agenda is organised to share and discuss the results: no sequence of presentations but rather a list of subjects to be discussed by sharing and comparing results of all the available simulations. Please bring your latop, and access to data/plots. (Internet access will be available)
Prerequisite is to have the list of experiments available prior to the meeting (please complete, see below).

Thursday 28 January

08:45 – 09:00 Introduction, objectives of the meeting, finalise agenda (Claire Lévy)
09:00 – 10:00 Good news - Overview of the main satisfactory results obtained by each group in their first experiments – Chair : XX and Claire Lévy
Each group to prepare one slide highlighting the “good news”.
If possible, please send the slide to Claire before Tuesday 26 January, in order to be able to look at them quickly one after the other during the session.
10:00 – 10:20 Wrap up of the session : What is working fine for now ? Can we draw common conclusions ?

10:40 – 12:00 Scanning the weaknesses in the results. Chair : Dave Storkey and Rym Msadek
For each subject (please add your name below if you have results to show), objective is to diagnostic the weakness in one or more experiment and exchange on possible improvements. Feel free to add subjects to discuss in the 1:30 to 3:30 session

  • Dense water formation/ ventilation in Southern Ocean: (please add your name here you have results to show)
    • L. Brodeau: coupled mode "EC-Earth" → LIM3 and its hyper sensitivity to SSS, the resulting gigantic polynias an associated excessive deep convective mixing around Antarctica
    • C. Bricaud: forced with ERAi → LIM3 and its hyper sensitivity to SSS, polynias around Antartic,sensibilty to ice time step (nn_fsbc)
    • J. Deshayes / O. Aumont : forced eORCA1 initially lacking ventilation in the southern ocean, fixed with modification of amax in southern ocean
  • Dense water formation / ventilation in North Atlantic (please add your name below if you have results to show)
    • Till Kuhlbrodt: weak AMOC at 26N, path of North Atlantic Current might be deviated, mixed layer depths
    • C. Bricaud: forced with ERAi → weak AMOC at 26N
    • L. Brodeau: forced with COREv2 → deep convective mixing in Labrador Sea still do not occur at coarse resolution (ORCA1)
    • J. Deshayes : dense water overflow through Greenland-Scotland Ridge (in eORCA1)
  • Runoffs
    • J. Deshayes : necessary developments to plug Antarctic precipitation to appropriate NEMO freshwater inputs ; strategy for Greenland ?

Meeting will take place Thursday 28 january 2016 and Friday morning (up to 1:00 p.m. at the latest) in Grenoble at Maison Jean Kuntzmann (MJK) Amphitheater, Saint Martin d'Hères Campus, Grenoble

Getting to the Maison Jean Kuntzmann Amphitheater

Tram:The Jean Kuntzmann amphitheater is 100 meters away from the "Bibliotheques Universitaires" tramway stop (map).
To get there, take the Tramway line "B" (in green on general map towards Gières - Plaine des Sports Get off the tram at Bibliotheques Universitaires stop.
The ride is approximately 22 minutes from the train station. For reference, the train station is located at the Gares stop and Grenoble city center is located between the Victor-Hugo and Sainte-Claire Les Halles stops.
