 Well most obvious thing is the discrepancy between branches/dev/hadax/r1205_SIMIP_GSI8@1273 and branches/dev/hadax/vn5.1.2_GSI8@1141. 
 What's the difference here?

 Alex says these things should be equivalent but the r1205_SIMIP_GSI8 branch is just the same as vn5.1.2_GSI8 with extra diagnostics in it for CMIP6 purposes.

+I cant see from the code that it's something which only applies to stand-alone cases, but maybe it is? Ed's not here to ask, but from what I can see it doesn't seem to be doing anything relevant to restartability.
