Error in rainfall field for ECMWF ERA-Interim forcings

Reported by: maignan Owned by: jgipsl
Priority: minor Milestone: ORCHIDEE 2.0
Component: Driver files Version: orchidee_1_9_5_2
Keywords: Forcing files Cc:

Description

A bug has been discovered that is likely to affect all our LSCE ERA-Interim forcings. We were using the ECMWF precipitations fields for our ORCHIDEE rainfall field but G. Balsamo has confirmed that precipitations include both rainfall plus snowfall so that we have too many rainfall when there is also snowfall in the ORCHIDEE fields
(see attached figures provided by N. Vuichard).

Can you be more specific so that we can see if it also affects the forcing on climserv.

I have used the following commands to go from the GRIB data to netCDF :
# Rainf
conv_grbnc 'var142' 'Rainf' ${month} 'Rainfall rate (convective + stratiform)' 'kg/m2s'
# Snowf
conv_grbnc 'var144' 'Snowf' ${month} 'Snowfall (convective + stratiform)' 'kg/m2s'

conv_grbnc is a function to be found in climserv:~polcher/ERA-Int-New/conv_cdonco

What is relevant here is that ID 142 of the GRIB file is considered to contain only rainfall and 144 only snowfall. Is this wrong ?

ERA-Interim forcing files are not stored at the shared account, IGCM. I suggest to not fix this issue.

ERA_New_Global in the shared account IGCM do not have this bug.
