Based on the file mcgrathm@irene193:/ccc/work/cont003/dofoco/dofoco/MAPS/FM/GLOBAL/, which is a map of global intact forests (0.25 degrees, seems to be a binary 0 or 1 value if a pixel is an intact forest or not), combine with the 15PFT LCC maps. All forest PFTs in the intact forest pixel are FM1. All the other forest PFTs are FM2.

Data for the above file comes from Potapov, P., Hansen, M. C., Laestadius L., Turubanova S., Yaroshenko A., Thies C., Smith W., Zhuravleva I., Komarova A., Minnemeyer S., Esipova E. 2016. β€œThe last frontiers of wilderness: Tracking loss of intact forest landscapes from 2000 to 2013” Science Advances, 2017; 3:e1600821. In theory, there should be two others years (2013 and 2016) but those have not yet been converted to .nc files.

The data and more documentation is found at: /home/users/sluys/GLOBAL_FM/.

Another approach would be if the Hurtt product contains "primary forest".

LUHv2h maps were combined with the ORCHIDEE specific PFT maps to reconstruct global forest management from 1600 to 2016. These maps distinguish only FM = 1 (unmanaged) and FM = 2 (thin and fell) where thin and fell can be used as a proxy for degraded forests prior to the start of formal forest management (~1750).

The code had to be adjusted to deal with global forest management with a background value of zero. A background value of zero results in better looking maps because the map better shows where the PFT is present and were it is absent. These changes have been committed in r6699.

The scripts to produce the maps have been archived on ​

The actual maps are stored on orchideeshare (/home/orchideeshare/igcmg/IGCM/SRF/FOREST_MANAGEMENT/...) and its mirror sites (${R_IN}/SRF/FOREST_MANAGEMENT/...). Subsequent changes in configurations FG2, FG4 and FG5 have been committed in r6807 and r6808.
