Description

The current PFT maps (and the underlying method to produce them) come with some obvious issues:

  • Partitioning between C3/C4 could be updated based on the Still et al maps
  • Regional cross walking tables (CWT) could be used to better account for regional differences between PFTs. The current CWT translates shrubs (a land cover type on the ESA maps) into a 60% broadleaved evergreen forest (PFT5). This explains the presence of PFT5 in the boreal zone. However, there are no broadleaved evergreen trees (even not 2 to 3 m tall) at the higher latitudes. A global set of regional CWT could overcome this issue.
  • Increasing the number and diversity of PFTs may solve several issues. The key question is this respect is whether we need more PFTs or a more dynamic parameterization (i.e. spatially dynamic parameters preferrably related to observable traits). Even the best parameterization is unlikely to overcome the fact that some vegetation is not yet presented in the model. One example is shrublands.
