A 2 days meeting was organized in Jussieu to gather all developpers and users of ORCHIDEE to discuss about the futur of the model developments concerning primarily the "Physic" of the modele. Few external contributors also came to provide an independant view of ongoing developments in other groups.

The meeting successfully gathered around 70 people.. Below is the agenda with a link to the different presentations and few words about the "round table discussions"

Monday 14 morning session: overview of ORCHIDEE

Monday 14 Afternoon Session: Hydrology

  • Hydrology in ORCHIDEE - Past achievements and perspectives (A. Ducharne) (presentation)
  • "Hydrological data assimilation in LSMs - The experience of the ECMWF" (P. deRosnay, ECMWF) (presentation)
  • Hydrology in CNRM-CM climate model: development of a simple aquifer scheme (J.P. Vergne, CNRM) (presentation)
  • Modeling ground water of French river basin (F. Habets) (presentation)
  • Water uses evolution and ground-water reservoirs: operating rule with ODDYCCEIA: links with ORCHIDEE & perspectives (P. Dumas) (presentation)
  • Accounting for human impact on hydrology in ORCHIDEE (M. Guimberteau) (presentation)

Round table: The future of hydrology in ORCHIDEE: which ways? which collaborations ? We had a short discussion on how to improve the ORCHIDEE model which lead to the following remarks:

Tuesday 14 Morning Session: Coupling with the atmosphere

Round tables: The future challenge for ORC – LMDz coupling (F. Cheruy)

Tuesday 14 Afternoon Session: Evaluation & Posters & Coding practices

ORCHIDEE in the Model Inter-comparison Projects (P. Ciais) (presentation)

Session on Evaluation (chair: N. Vuichard)

Presentation of the on-going effort towards a systematic evaluation chain (N. Vuichard); See his presentation here

Contributions from all:

Poster session with Coffee (F. Maignan)

Presentation of all posters (1 slide / poster ) by Fabienne Maignan presentation followed by a coffee brake around the posters.

ORCHIDEE code structure and its future evolution (F. Maignan & S. Luyssaert)

  • Current code structure and potential evolution (S. Luyssaert) presentation
  • Coding practicies from current developers (M. Mcgrath) presentation
  • The constraint for automatic code differentiation (M. Mancip) presentation

Round table: How to improve the ORCHIDEE code structure?

We started a constructive discussion in order to derive in the coming months a little document that will propose new coding guidelines in ORCHIDEE and a new routines/module strucuture. This effort is summarized under https://forge.ipsl.jussieu.fr/orchidee/wiki/HowTo/FortranStandards
