ESM2025-N-cycle

This page is dedicated to the ESM2025 project (Earth System Models - European Project), especially for the N-cycle modelling. On this topic are working Marion Gehlen, Juliette Lathière, Didier Hauglustaine, Nicolas Vuichard and Karine Laurent.

On Wednesday, 21th September

In person with Juliette, Marion and Nicolas.

Presentation of recent results for the present day run, with:

1) Data used (BBG, NAT and ANT); 2) Results of vertical profiles and total loss for 2000 (year with an imposed rescaling at 316 ppb); 3) Results over the whole period (2000-2007) with vertical concentration, surface concentration, total loss and burden.

Oceanic emissions seem constant over 150 years: Marion says it is okay, because N2O concentration are not so modified with increase of temperature and so on.

Discussion about the rescaling factor: if it is too low, it means that emissions are low too; if the correction is too big, emissions are too important also.

TO DO

  • Chart of CEDS without soil emissions category,
  • Plot BBG emissions in same units than others graphs (meaning in Tg/yr)
  • Invest if it is possible to recover input emissions from surface concentration and total loss (in order to better reconstruct emissions)

Some miscellaneous characteristics:

  • GES configuration,
  • 39 vertical layers, resolution 144x142,
  • from fictives years 1970 to 2015,
  • no anthropogenic emissions,
  • BBG emissions stayed at 1850 (as well as aircraft).

Quantities to remember: (mean of 5 years)

  • Total N2O loss: 10.73 TgN/y
  • Total N2O emissions: 10.73 TgN/y
  • Burden : 1368 TgN (ref Tian= 1462 TgN in the 1980s)

PRESENT-DAY RUN

Some miscellaneous characteristics:

  • GES configuration,
  • 39 vertical layers, resolution 144x142,
  • 'real' years 2000 to 2007,
  • anthropogenic emissions.

Quantities to remember: For 2000:

  • Total N2O loss: 11.78 TgN/y
  • Total N2O emissions: 10.73 TgN/y (ref Tian= 9.7 TgN/yr natural + 0.6 bbg + 0.3 waste water)
  • Burden : 1514 TgN (ref Tian= 1555 TgN in 2007-2016)

Last notebooks/working documents

  1. work_on_data_to_complete_sectors_with_unknows_categories : Notebook in order to better understand repartition of subcategories that are not in CEDS emissions files and grouped in sectors.
  2. Transform_2000nc_from1970_to1999_via_CEDScsv : To reconstruct geographical emissions from 1970 to 1999 from 2000's emissions and with a ratio computed thanks to csv's data. Need to use obelix' script home/users/klaurent/CEDS_transform/nco_transform_1970_1999_ncfiles.sh after this notebook (delete _FillValue mainly).

+ on Irene:

  • on workdir: scripts_nco/prepare_N2OLOSS.job: will compute N2O total loss, N2O phtolyse loss, N2O o1d loss and N2O burden. This file creates some nc file on scratch directory (in Loss_files) and some txt file in place.

+ on Ciclad/Spirit?:

  • INCAFLXANT_1970_1999.sh: bash script to create sflx_lmdz_ANT for irene (source code in ANT/McDuffie. The creation is made on datadir.

+ on Obelix:

  • CEDS_transform/nco_transform_1970_1999_ncfiles.sh: final step on nc files while transforming excel data into nc files.
