ESM2025-N-cycle

This page is dedicated to the ESM2025 project (Earth System Models - European Project), especially for the N-cycle modelling. On this topic are working Marion Gehlen, Juliette Lathière, Didier Hauglustaine, Nicolas Vuichard and Karine Laurent.

You will find information on the evolution of the project on these different pages:

Last meeting

On Wednesday, 19th October

In person with Juliette, Didier and Nicolas.

Look on comparison of EDGAR inventory and the one of CEDS. Globally, their emissions are similar but if we look by sectors, there are different. In EDGAR, apparently, it could be better to drop fertilizers and biomass burning categories.

Use of NMVOC proxy: seems to be a good idea but have to drop some sectors already taken into account in orchidee dataset. NMVOC better than NH3 because too related to agricultural sector, neither to CO because too related to industry, then NMVOC seem to be the less polluted by one particular sector.

TO DO

  • Comparison of emissions (without soil emissions and fertilizers) and understood relationship between their subcategories;
  • Have a look on geographical repartition (in order to see if patterns are similar);
  • Proxy to recompute without soil emission and without domestic sector. (from 0 Tg/yr in 1750 to little in 1850);
  • See with Anne to come into coupled model.

A few words on the next MERMAID meeting (December 14) with a presentation of N2O cycle and my work (introduction with Tian graph).

Last intermediate conclusions

PRE INDUSTRIAL RUN

Some miscellaneous characteristics:

  • GES configuration,
  • 39 vertical layers, resolution 144x142,
  • from fictives years 1970 to 2015,
  • no anthropogenic emissions,
  • BBG emissions stayed at 1850 (as well as aircraft).

Quantities to remember: (mean of 5 years)

  • Total N2O loss: 10.73 TgN/y
  • Total N2O emissions: 10.73 TgN/y
  • Burden : 1368 TgN (ref Tian= 1462 TgN in the 1980s)

PRESENT-DAY RUN

Some miscellaneous characteristics:

  • GES configuration,
  • 39 vertical layers, resolution 144x142,
  • 'real' years 2000 to 2007,
  • anthropogenic emissions.

Quantities to remember: For 2000:

  • Total N2O loss: 11.78 TgN/y
  • Total N2O emissions: 10.73 TgN/y (ref Tian= 9.7 TgN/yr natural + 0.6 bbg + 0.3 waste water)
  • Burden : 1514 TgN (ref Tian= 1555 TgN in 2007-2016)

Last notebooks/working documents

  1. Proxy_reconstruction_preindustriel.ipynb: With NMVOC emissions from pre industrial, analyses evolution and correlation between NMVOC and N2O. (not very useful except to have dataframe for the next step)
  2. Proxy_reconstruction_preindustriel-NOx.ipynb: same as the previous one but using NOx emissions rather than NMVOC. Made because emissions converge to zero in 1750, which is not the case for NMVOC.
  3. create_proxy_n2o_via_nmvoc.ipynb: using NMVOC data, reconstruction of a csv files with emissions per country from 1850 to 1969. Also, reconstruction without RCO sector (in order to begin more around 0 Tg/Yr? in 1850).

+ on Irene:

  • on workdir: scripts_nco/prepare_N2OLOSS.job: will compute N2O total loss, N2O phtolyse loss, N2O o1d loss and N2O burden. This file creates some nc file on scratch directory (in Loss_files) and some txt file in place.

+ on Ciclad/Spirit?:

  • INCAFLXANT_1970_1999.sh: bash script to create sflx_lmdz_ANT for irene (source code in ANT/McDuffie). The creation is made on datadir.

+ on Obelix:

  • CEDS_transform/nco_transform_country_1970_1999_ncfiles.sh: final step on nc files while transforming excel data into nc files.
  • Transform_into_ncfile_preindustrial.sh: script corresponding to the notebook Transform_country_csv_to_nc_1970_2019.ipynb for preindustrial period.
