This is a page which can contain reports from the task force aiming at improving the grass/crop management in the ORCHIDEE model

04/12/2023 - 2nd meeting to discuss the ongoing action around the grass/crop management in the model

Present: PP, DG, RL, KN, NVio, NdN, BG PP, KN, DG,RL, NdN, NVio, BG

Kim present her project where she will developed ORCHIDEE on the agriculture with a focus over Italy

The others detailed a bit the ongoing project (see previous meeting notes).

DG said that Yang Su did a work on the constrain for winter wheat, he tried on maize but not enough data to be as good as for winter wheat.

We need a comparison between ORCHIDEE-CROP and ORCHIDEE trunk

NVio can help on that and he will prepare a comparison between ORCHIDEE-CROP/ORCHIDEE TRUNK. PP will ask NVui and Mojtaba if they can have also help. A comparison version of model paper could be a way to coordinate the effort.

An integration plan

The idea would be developp specific crop aspects into the CROP version and then take what is needed into the trunk. For ESM2025 NVui will do it in the v3.

If we add all the details that are in CROP it could be then complicated to parametrize everything in the trunk.

We might consider 2 different objectives: working on impact vs. working on climate issues. CROP could be used for impact studies and the trunk for the feedbacks with climate.

We must rank the needs instead of list the needs and then implement everything.

What is the status of STICS. We should keep contact with them

Next meeting early Feb.

24/10/2023 - First meeting to discuss the ongoing action around the grass/crop management in the model

Present: PP, Pciais, DG, RL, NVui, NVio, NdN, BG

The meeting was organised by Bertrand in order to discuss / harmonise the effort around the inclusion (and further developments) of Crops / grassland specificities in the TRUNK making use of past developments.

We all have different ongoing or upcoming projects that will focus on (or strongly valorise) cropland (and grassland management) in ORCHIDEE. After a review of these projects, we then proposed follow up actions in order to i) avoid duplication of efforts, ii) avoid competition between people within the ORC groupe iii) define futur steps for crop/grass management developments, and iv) choose the optimal strategy for the inclusion of crop management in the Trunk:

  • Bertrand will organise a task force (to be open to all) in order to have regular meetings on this subject
  • Such group would meet every 1-2 months
  • As a first step we would need to put the ORCHIDEE-MICT-CROP under SVN to see more clearly how / if it is suitable to start from that version for the merge in the Trunk.

Daniel already investigated and the model is under Git (not SVN): https://github.com/yangsssu/ORCHIDEE-CROP

  • We probably need to start a wiki page to keep the minutes / action list of this new task force ?
  • We also probably need to inquire again how STICS has progressed compared to its first use in ORC ?

A brief list/description of projects is:

Bertrand:

  • MRV-for-SOC European project: 24 months of post-doc to look at the impacts of Crops and Grass management on SOC
  • Land Mitigation Post-doc from CLAND (18 month)
  • Project submitted at FairC program linking economy and C budgets
  • FairC - ALAMOD projet ciblé : it may provide in the futur some support to link agronomic models like STICS and PASIM

Nicolas Vuichard:

  • ESM2025 project: crop management to be inserted in ORCHIDEE-V3 linking the management with the N cycle; Mojtaba Houballah started his post-doc in September
  • Past development from Maureen Baudor (PhD) : implementation of NH3 emission from Livestock sector - Implementation of a simple scheme for grassland management using livestock density information as input forcing.

Ronny :

  • Phd1 (CsC program DG, PC): starting on crop leguminous
  • Phd2 (with E. Ceschia, PC): Ruminant in France; cover crop and rotation impacts on C storage, Albedo,.
  • Phd3 (with N. Viovy): effect of salt compounds deposition on stomatal conductance
  • Phd4 (with N. Viovy, Juliette L.) Impact of Ozone deposition on crop/grass biomass

Nicolas Viovy :

  • ANR-AgriPV (Agri - Photol Voltaic) project: 2 years post-doc on Photo-voltaic above crop ?

Nathalie :

  • Not working currently on ORC development
  • Recent student highlighted a representation problem of ORC-CMIP6 (ORCV2) on crop phenology over the tropics (no double cropping as it is the case) and on spring C3 crop over temperate regions; simple patch proposed.

Philippe Ciais :

  • Xuhui continue with him the development of ORC-CROP
  • CALIPSO - Wei Li: work on bioenergy crops with ORC-CROP
  • CLAND - Yang Su : hybrid modelling to recalibrate the phenology of crops / double cropping with Machine learning approaches
  • Beijing University - LSCE - International project on tropical crops parameterizations and sisimulations in East A Sia

Philippe Peylin :

  • EYE-CLIMA project: need to improve in general Crops in the TRUNK for simulations over Europe
  • TRACCS program: Project on biogeochemistry: can provide support to integrate crop in the Trunk

Daniel :

  • biophys impact of farming measures with focus on albedo (ClienFarms? project ):
  • ongoing PhD (Ke YU) on albedo from S2 and eddy covariance sites & 1 year of pd starting Sept'24 for European scale biophys impacts

Kim Naudts :

  • AVENGERS, similar to EYE-CLIMA, improve crops (preferably in the Trunk) to get emissions over Europe (with a focus on Italy). Maybe implementation of perennial crops. Post-doc starts in January.
